What is a ‘Dice Goblin’?

One of stereotypes that a player can adopt is the title of “Dice Goblin”. Among other things, this term is used to describe a player who has a desire to expand their dice collection, is an avid admirer of dice, or most times both. Most tables will have at least one ‘Dice Goblin’, and you may recognize them as the player who brings different sets every week, multiple sets at a times, and those showing off the cool new ones they just got.

The use of “Goblin” is to playfully refer to a number of different things. This can range from referring to:

  • The chaotic collection of these sets and storage (they live everywhere and are not organized)

  • The goblin inside you urging more dice to be added to the collection

  • Lower cost dice accumulating like a goblin with a pile of scraps

  • Someone who has just started collecting dice

Another sub-name for this stereotype is “Dice Dragon” which can refer to someone who is:

  • More selective with new additions, usually more expensive sets

  • More organized and protect for the longevity of the dice

  • A very large collection of dice

‘Dragons’ are more curators of dice, mainly focusing on quality. ‘Goblins’ tend to collect whatever comes their way, focusing on mainly quantity. Both are valid in their dice collecting because they both share the joy and appreciation for dice, which is a staple for this type of player.
