What Are “Geode” Dice?
Geode dice feature a design in the center of a pitted interior die to mimic geodes that have a crystalline structure that sparkles when you crack it open. Typically, these include some kind of foil or shiny flakes that are attached to the carved out blank interior die, though you can also paint the carved space as well. This is evident in my “Rainbow Palette” set.
The process starts with casting a blank interior die, then using a Dremel tool to carve out a pit for the flakes/foil to sit on. Making it look like a natural uneven edge is the hard part but adds so much character to the finished product. Whether using foils, glitters, paint, etc. to decorate the Dremel-ed section, the design gets casted in resin to protect it and make it permanent. Once you have this blank interior die that is complete again, you can move to the final casting with the numbers.
In total this type of dice style takes 3 separate castings to complete, or 36 hours of curing, which makes it labor intensive but gives you a largely unique dice set that is not possible with mass produced sets. When played in a game, this dice style is sure to stand out and make a statement.
